Top ten of the largest solar energy installations under construction

After the successive regulatory changes in the Spanish photovoltaic sector in recent years, the year 2012 is characterized by the announcement of mega plants (greater than 100 MW), to be developed in Spain during the next few months whose intention is to inject electricity into the grid without receiving any type of premium & paneles solares guatemala.

The large companies in the photovoltaic sector are working behind these projects, such as Gehrlicher, Würth, Andaltia or Ecoenergías. Obviously, the economy of scale itself “plays” in favor of these undertakings since the cost of production becomes cheaper the larger the size of an installation.

According to Renewable Energies and according to what was reported by Red Eléctrica de España, some 9,000 MW of photovoltaic solar energy are in different study phases to be connected to the grid. This figure represents more than double the photovoltaic energy capacity installed in Spain (about 4,300 MW). Only in Murcia have projects for a total of about 4,000 MW been presented.

The “ranking” of the main solar undertakings is as follows:

1.- Nuñez de Balboa Project:The company Ecoenergías del Guadiana seeks to build a photovoltaic installation with a total power of 500 MW in the town of Usagre. The total planned investment amounts to 700 million euros. It will occupy an estimated area of ​​between 1000 and 1200 hectares and will be able to supply more than 660 thousand inhabitants. If carried out by full power, it would be one of the largest solar energy installations in the world.

2.- Project in Lorca: in this case it is the Andaltia company the one that intends to develop a mega photovoltaic project of 400 MW in the city of Lorca (Murcia). The total investment will be more than 600 million euros and the original plan is to develop this facility in 4 phases (40 MW, 50 MW, 150 MW and 160 MW).

3.- Würth Project: also in Murcia it is intended to develop this final 287 MW project, more specifically in the municipality of Jumilla. The plant is expected to occupy an area close to 500 hectares and the total investment will be approximately 280 million euros. It will be able to supply electricity to more than 100,000 homes. It is expected to start production in 2016.4.- Gehrlicher Project:new undertaking to be carried out in Extremadura with an initial power of 250 MW that will most likely be expanded to 300 MW. The investment will be about 250 million euros and it is expected that the first phase of 50 MW can be connected next year. The facility will occupy some 750 hectares.

Challenges to be overcome above all of a technical nature and being able to obtain the support of the administration will allow the development of these mega-photovoltaic installations without premiums during the next few years.

Increasingly and especially with regard to the future of solar energy in the Spanish market, there is a “division” between small-size projects, mainly linked to self-consumption and large-scale ones. For the latter we are going to review which are currently the main projects under construction worldwide for photovoltaic solar energy .

From Energía Solar España we want to add to the SolarPlaza list  the development to be carried out in Spain, more specifically in Cáceres, with a total power to be installed of 300 MW by the company Gehrlicher Solar España, which would place it in the third position of this ranking.
